“Fairy tales say that apples were golden only to refresh the forgotten moment when we found that they were green. They make rivers run with wine only to make us remember, for one wild moment, that they run with water.”

”O if only you knew Christ’s worth and excellency, what he is in himself, what he has done for you, and deserved from you, you would need no arguments of mine to persuade you to love him!” (John Flavel)

“Loving our enemies is not just for them; it protects our own hearts as well. When we bless others instead of curse, we are steering clear of the darkness and keep open avenues for joy and peace.” (Gavin Ortlund)

Ruth Lee is starting How to Think: A Survival Guide for a World at Odds
“Why would people ever think, when thinking deprives them of “the pleasure of sharing an attitude one knows is socially approved”—especially in an online environment where the social approval of one’s attitudes is so much easier to acquire, in the currency of likes, faves, followers, and friends? And to acquire instantaneously?”,

听Marvin Gaye读这个故事略感过于浪漫。我喜欢Thriller。不过目前我还在开头,期待改观。

Footnote: 17. Shepherd, Vision I-8. No doubt significantly, Continence alone is said to “look like a man.” Haha.

喜欢奥康奈说:“我们喜欢沉溺在致命的逻辑中,喜欢制造越来越狭窄的范畴,喜欢规定好的主题和规定好的态度。”

我觉得当一个人只剩下理性,会很可怕。Just like the opposite.

提此勉励自己。

Chapter 3-4 made me laugh so hard lol. The following chapter was thought provoking, the Piraha people somehow reminded me of Lisu Christians in China, too.

Wolfe writes in a comic style I am not used to. His prose contains lots of sarcasm, caricatures, puns and anecdotes. At times I had to stop and find out what he is referring to, but it’s not at all a dreary read and I have learnt quite a bit about Darwin as a person and his proponents in their context. Probably I would understand the book better if I had read On the Origin of Species.

Ruth Lee is starting Origen: the Song of Songs; Commentary & Homilies
Amy Hughs: “The passion and familiarity of it all perhaps renders the modern reader uncomfortable, even feeling as though one is forced to play the voyeur. It is only voyeuristic if the reader is not the one involved in the encounter. The Pedagogue not only instructs the Bride/ascender, but also desires to encounter and transform her in such a way as to dwell within her. “

Origen needs no explainer.
