Loved this as a kid. The rapey parts were ghastly but also unfortunately typical of early 70s SF. I feel like the series got a lot better once Menolly came along.

This book feels like the love child of Goblin Emperor and Baru Cormorant and I’m SO HAPPY ABOUT IT.

You know what drives me nuts? A chapter two infodump that takes place in an academic setting as part of a discussion between students and/or teachers/mentors. Seriously, how many of these have I read? 30? Scalzi’s plots and worldbuilding are so fun but blarrrgggggghhh the infodumping is so predictable and frankly lazy writing. Tell by showing, not by telling.

This book is marvelously, unflinchingly frank about race. If more white people read this instead of that trash "the Help" maybe our country wouldn't be so f*cked right now.
