this is... bad! but i can't bring myself to stop reading because a) sapphic vampires and b) i don't abandon books in hopes that they'll improve (they never do). should've listened to my gut and taken my pretty significant dislike toward the year of the witching into account before i started this one :(

it's not a 90s vampire novel if someone doesn't have at least one (1) sexual fantasy about robert smith

reading shirley jackson feels like having a gun pointed at your temple at all times. the end of the first section made me absolutely sick with grief

this is so good and so dark that i genuinely can't believe the marketing of this novel. the book cover and blurbs comparing the author to sue monk kidd (🤢) make it seem like the novel is a prime choice for a southern grandma book club, but call your daughter home is quite literally a fantastic southern gothic story with great horror mixed in there. i'm an enormous fan

most of these are incredibly stale, unsexy, and really dubious in terms of consent. disappointed so far, although there are a few hidden gems

i truly, genuinely love this so much that i'm about to rip out my spinal cord and jump rope with it. my entire conception of self rests on nineteenth-century queer culture, and this novel is just a marvel

the oversimplified racial politics and white saviorism of this novel are intensely grating, but i'm additionally confounded by how ableist it is toward its one pretty explicitly autistic character. if i didn't have to read this slog of a book for a class i would've dropped it after the first 30 pages.
