So far this is amazing. I'm curious to see how well the premise plays out across an entire novel.

I am losing patience with this. I don't want to abandon it but I'm getting annoyed. Something needs to happen.

Disappointing, so far. The style is bland and the story wants to be a movie. Might have to abandon this one. I'll give it a couple more chapters.

It's possible I'm only enjoying this book because it argues everyone is probably wrong most of the time, which appeals to me because Klosterman is included in 'everyone'. I know it's an ugly trait, but I love to hate him. It's not even worth cataloguing the errors and logical leaps here.

"The failure ruins Melville's life: He becomes an alcoholic and a poet" 🤣 Even if every other sentence of this book sucks, I will love it for that.

I'm enthralled. Also, I will be so fucking mad if the dog dies. That's not specific to this book, though. That's just a normal reaction to the tendency of authors to be complete dicks when it comes to fictional animals. Stop that.

I very much enjoyed the childhood stories, but so far the rest is dull. Unless you were there (and often even if you were) nobody wants to hear stories about drinking and tending bar, particularly when the stories primarily consist of listening to the previous generation talk about their glory days, which also seem to have been spent sitting around drinking. Where are the stories? Did nothing ever happen?

It's fairly ridiculous that Sanneh chooses to separate 'punk' from 'rock', a category which he defines to include, for example, Billy Joel, Rush, and Slayer (in other words, every type of rock except punk). I suppose I'm willing to let him have it, though, if only because he admits his bias as a fan.

This is interesting. At times the frequent cultural references seem like name dropping, though.

I'm enjoying this quite a bit. The knowledge of, respect, and enthusiasm for all styles of music is impressive and refreshing.

I'm done. I'm not forcing myself to finish this. There are truly great, timeless stories here, but they're buried under a repetitive, dull avalanche of misogyny. I just can't do it.

Is it possible for something to be both compelling and boring? "Ugh, I wish something would happen . . . maybe if I read a little more . . . "

Very slow going (erudite writing on subjects that require time to ponder) but I'm out of library renewals so I'll have to take a break on this one.

About halfway through and I'm wishing I'd re-read Nazareth, North Dakota before starting. Still enjoying it, though.
