Having a section dedicated to humorous ghost stories was a great choice from Haining. I know Briggs was critical of the degeneration of the form with the introduction of comedy but I think it’s severely underrated and gives the writer a great deal of latitude with the ghost. It also provides a reprieve from the more earnest tales of the Gothic flavour. Definitely more noticeable in the American tradition.
