As an example of the lack of citations, chapter 10 concludes with a quote from "René and Jean Dubos" -- apparently a book -- that gives no idea whether they said this at the time of the events described (sometime in the 1800s???) or later. A Google search shows Jean died in 1988. It's just a staggering lack of detail. I still can't wrap my head around how the publisher OKed this lack of source citation.

An interesting read, but the large-scale disregard for source citations continues to astound me. How did the editor praised for his fact checking do so with so little detail on how Green came by his information? It's made worse by the occasional attribution of quotes to, e.g., an author AND her book title. I just don't get how Green and his entire editorial team decided to dispense with citations almost entirely.

Liking the writing and storytelling so far, but very frustrated by the lack of citations. How does a reader know how he learned about Kaw-we-li? Where can we learn more? Same for Mansa Musa, who "was likely" history's richest person. That's a rather bold claim to make, much less without any supporting detail, explanation or citation to support it.
