Wow, it's great to read a gritty epic for a change! The Malazan books are vast, dark tomes with dozens of complex characters of all shades of grey. Such heroes as there are cling to brittle shards of hope in their struggle against rapacious gods and malicious demons. Don't tackle these if you find Harry Potter confusing.

I'm really impressed by this. Lords of Deception is like a turbo-charged Game of Thrones but much more steeped in politics than dragon / white walker nonsense. Knights and assassins in a quasi-European medieval setting, it's action from page one, and well written.
