So far, this book has (1) labelled "Michelle" an unusual name and "Amanda" an old-fashioned one, (2) stated that it is unusual for adopted children to know they're adopted, and speculated on what terrible psychological damage that must inflict. And okay, the book was published in 1980, but that was my childhood, and just...no.

Very thorough and interesting. I especially like the unflinching look at Jane Seymour as much less the naive innocent than one might think.

Lighter than his usual work. Again, no particular surprises, but man was I glad to see someone address the misogyny in the Gospel of Thomas. So many people glom onto a few phrases of that gospel as revolutionary without knowing what the rest of it says.

Already fascinated, not so much by the contradictions as how easily they have been missed. And I speak as someone who went to Catholic school for 15 years, and mass twice a week for much of it.

From the intro, the actual *information* isn't that different from what I learned at UD - how many people have never at least heard the idea that the gospels were not written by eyewitnesses? The purpose that info is put to may be very different, though. I'm intrigued.

Much of this is stuff I already read in Going Clear, but with more detail. I'll say this for Hubbard: he was first-rate confabulist.

This is just what I needed right now, and I can't wait to read it with Susannah. TNT folks - the main character is a DOUBTER.

I have to say, this puts my current medical issues in perspective. It's really quite horrifying to think of how much control over our lives we give doctors.

Man, if this book doesn't become about something OTHER than wrestling and how great at nearly everything Mark Schultz is very, very soon, I'm bailing. I like learning about new things, but isn't this supposed to be about a murder.

Lucy Busker is finished with Pete Rose: An American Dilemma
Very interesting book; I'd say a must-read for those of us who really felt Rose's rise and fall. The author really considers all angles and arguments, recognizes the emotions behind the Hall of Fame question. Is it unfair that Rose should be kept out when so many steroid users are in? Probably. Is the decision making process a clusterfuck? Definitely. But is Rose deserving of the censure he received? Yep.

So far, well-written and interesting. I've learned a lot about Rose, although most of it just reinforces what I already thought (great baseball player, asshole in every other arena). I'm also learning a lot about baseball and Cincinnati, two things I love.

Interestingly, so far, I'm learning as much about the Cincinnati my Dad grew up in as I am about Rose. This seems appropriate, since he taught me about baseball. I can still see him sitting on the floor in front of the couch, watching tv and sprinkling salt on a lemon half and licking it off.

I'm about one chapter from adding this to the "given up on" shelf. It's just so...unsubtle. The style, the plot, the characters, everything is a cliche.

Honestly, I'm getting really tired of the "A {Series} Story" entries, especially given that I can't FIND some of the series, and the story ends up involving a chunk of exposition on a typical "kickass woman with magical background" urban fantasy.

On the fence so far. Not nuts about the central conceit of stolen brides, but there's a lot more to go to see how it works out.
