really really excellent. makes me question/dislike some major decisions made in adapting the title story to film, which just goes to show how effective this is. the line about life looking an inch shorter than it ought to will haunt me forever

It’s a very interesting read from a modern lens (especially Hugo’s takes on women, religion, and capitalism, which as a feminist lesbian semi-atheist socialist I often found lacking), but at its heart it really is such a moving story with many powerful arguments about inequality and justice. Also Jean Valjean made me cry <3
