Trying to articulate why I'm so frustrated with this book. Oddly, despite the topic, I think it's a book written by or for someone without much biblical literacy. Its payoffs and breakthroughs often seem banal for someone who's grown up with the Bible and who's spent a lot of time reading more biblically familiar scholarship of the period.

"The cross is really luminous only when it is active. It is its own energy that makes its own light" (324).

"Authority's seat and source is not God's love, but God's holiness.... The love in God must itself rest on the holiness of God, ... we can trust love with real faith only if it show itself absolutely holy" (332).

"Our supreme ethical act is the faith that gives us at once our Saviour and ourselves" (336).

It is authority that the world chiefly needs and the preaching of the hour lacks--an authoritative Gospel in a humble personality.

The preacher has be to be sure of a knowledge that creates experience, and does not rise out of it. His burthen is something given, something that reports a world beyond experience, a world that is not of experience, though always in its shape.

I am on the hunt for a Christian epistemology adequate to the extraordinary adventure of and manifold variety in the Christian life I have experienced and witnessed.

Ben Quash's account of the given and the found, his balance between Christology and pneumatology, is as good as I have found so far.

I admire Grant with the ferocity of many very small suns. Never been prouder to share a birthday with this gullible, innocent, quiet, grim, soft-spoken, well-spoken, family man grand-strategist failure success indifferent dresser.

It's time.

Starting a reread of all ten volumes, in order, this time, for personal and professional reasons.

Stoked.

so already I would put this on a short list of books I've found helpful to give historical context to Western culture's present spiritual condition: Alasdair MacIntyre's After Virtue, Lesslie Newbigin's The Gospel in a Pluralist Society, and Tom Holland's Dominion. Probably Charles Taylor's A Secular Age belongs on the list, too, but I haven't read it :).

Huh. Apparently, in the 1100s and 1200s in France, there was a tendency among clerics and teachers to use their status over laity and students in order to give it away to those laity and students, to raise the lowly to level ground at the foot of the cross, and for everyone to think of walking the pilgrimage of the Christian life together, helping each other along the way.

That checks out.
