First thing on hearing about this book was to look for was whether William Jennings Bryan was prominent in this history. H.L. Mencken treats Bryan as a fool, drawing from Bryan’s anti-evolution part in the Scopes Trial, but sifting in some reference to his Cross of Gold speech & stance. Bryan is, rightly. Also, Marriner Eccles, the great force for banking reform in the New Deal.

Here is the passage:

At a point in the book over multiple preceding chapters tracing the many threads of its development and about one thread and on a set of Brit pull-quote luminaries there is a culminating representative passage on how publicly but subtly fascism has attained an equally subtly, public mainstream status in the west. So far: The interwar rise and decline and postwar rise again of the Oswald Mosley and the origins of British fascism and connections to it (proactive and/or sympathetic) among its elites. The prominent names among this elite, of politicians, a general, cultural notables, various “lords” and “ladies” and a monarch. Pioneering the training of Ukrainian nationalists as a product of this fascism is mentioned.
