Just finished Genoa, and picked this up. Only 10% but already great stuff!

Loving this! Reminds me of Susan Howe's Birthmark. I must confess I haven't read Moby Dick, despite numerous attempts, and know little about Melville's life. The Colombus parallels and the story about the narrator and his brother are more interesting than I expected.

Wow! I stupidly did not expect a play when I bought this at my local bookstore. So far so good!

Great chapter about the relation between the profits from sugar plantations translating into the art world and oral history about the Troubles during the 1920s.

Already becoming one of my favorite books! Love the wandering travel writing mixed with memory and history. Learning about Sir Thomas Browne, Joseph Conrad's life on the sea, the heroism Roger Casement. Sebald seems to conemplate these like the disaster that is human history, the shadow of annihilation cast over every moment, and the rare flickers of dignity and justice in a seemingly unjust universe.
