One of the characters in this book entire family history is lifted wholesale from an Edith Wharton short story -- now I have to decide wether it's just an ill considered homage or outright plagiarism. Carlos Fuentes may be the first author I have to blacklist :/

I'm not sure why this is so widely mischaracterized as a 'naturalist' work -- it is well within the tradition of the sensation novel.
