What % of later books are Spenser telling someone that people have shame about their job or love life or something totally normal to and then that person asks Spenser if he has any shame or worry and he says no. Then the other person complements Spenser and if it’s Hawk or Susan, we hear how amazingly perfectly balanced they are too? Like half these books are just set ups to talk about how perfect Spenser is.

I love how far out of his way Parker goes to prove liberals are wrong. Dude literally just said he has issues with Northerners and Parker has to make sure we all know it has nothing to do with race in the dumbest way possible. Has anyone checked if Parker was listening to The Daily Caller before he passed?

Oh and a guy who may be innocent can get his ass beaten by the SO of a stalking victim because Spenser has a hunch the guy stalked a different woman. Spenser gave him the full name and the SO used to date him. So discreet!!!!

Apparently you can call HR at a big company or the police and they’ll pass your name and number on to crime victims without even checking who you are. I would imagine stalkers themselves woulf love this.

Hawk didn’t beat the guy up cause he’s gay. He beat him up hecause he hit on him. And hecause this guy is a professor and gay and is faux-black power, he must be a predator!

Meanwhile, Spenser had a girl shove her tongue down his throat. A few books back a housewife literally gor naked in front of him.

Wow! The analogy just became crystal clear in a way that is heartbreaking and beautifully crafted and poetically written.

The chapters about the hero remind me very much of Robert Parker, down to the black sidekick who cracks jokes in Ebonics dialogue and the hip, tough girlfriend. less noir than Parker but plenty of Marlowe references.

So much fun!

Oh and the fat jokes. I swear he makes minor characters fat just to say something supposedly witty about how they would cry su someone to death. We get it. Fat people are funny.

We get it. Everyone likes to go to prostitutes in Westrros. Does it have to be the go-to joke everywhere for every one?

I'm to believe a major preoccupation of some of the characters is to punish people who killed a baby? Amidst all the violence and all, killing a baby is somehow so beyond the pale as to require serious plotting?

Defense of the confederacy as fighting for its unique identity and culture. Another thing to throw into the theories of why this book was suddenly published now.

I'm not sure how I would read this book if I didn't know Mockingbird so well. I suspect Scout would not be as well-defined a character. Still, I'm enjoying this even if the big twist feels a bit gimmicky at the moment of its revelation.

Just learned a new word: enisle.

The premise is wonderful. I hope that VM Straka remains a slightly quirky European surrealist a la Italo Calvino and not an action-adventure writer.

The plot and characters continue to be great but I still really don't like the writing. The bad guy (no spoilers) speaks like every evil gloating villain with no sense of remorse.

Still don't like the writing. And there are way too many mysteries and discrepancies to keep up with--although I guess a lot of them have to do with his infidelity. However, the characters are great, probably the most three dimensional characters I've ever read.

So far I don't like the writing. The diary entries don't read like diary entries and I can't understand when the first chapter takes place--on the 5th anniversary or after it as he remembers back. This lack of attention to detail and continuity are very distracting.

Disappointed by the reason the hero is in danger. Kind of lame and the language that it's announced in is jarringly different from the rest of the book.

Been enjoying it. Classic Gaiman. But he just did the thing where the hero or villain makes an impossibly perfect guess that turns out to be 100% correct. And in this case it sort of destroys a larger part of the premise. Like the heroes saying, "Let's go to Brazil. They'll never find us there," only to have the villain say, "They were wearing red shirts? I'll bet they're in Brazil!"
