This is the second time I've read this book, and the second time through this book resonated with me stronger than a first. While many complain that Simmons lost the thread in the second 2 books of the Hyperion series, I feel that it is these last two that his message is the strongest. I'd recommend the series to anyone, and I'd place this book up there with Dune and (perhaps controversially) The Gone Away World.

I hadn't read a Clancy novel since I finished Rainbow Six when I saw in 7th grade (19 years ago). Reading Clancy as a professional, and someone in the military that Clancy resoundingly praises, was like trying on a piece of clothing from when you were younger. You want it to fit, you remember it being comfortable, but you still know that it won't fit again.

This is one of most poorly organized, researched, and written books that deals with the USSR, Russia, Russians, or Russian culture. I understand this is science fiction, but the author consistently makes historical, ethnic, and linguistic mistakes. I actively wish I could unread this book.
