Chapter 6- amazing depiction of memories- trauma & (un)reality.

Dr Perry, while working w/the Ranch Dividion children of Waco learned that humans are extremely social and that forms a lot of ideology and also, helping kids recover from traumatic experiences is best done by increasing quality relationships for the child.

Interesting ideas about ADHD--Perry suggests that for the most part, this isn't real and that when it is observed, it is more likely the symptom/response of something deeper. His theory suggests that often, children with PTSD will present like kids with ADHD.

the more you read & learn, the more complex the problems of US intervention becomes.A chapter that illustrates this clearly is “The Poor American” about the legacy of Dave Gitelson, a volunteer who lived among the farmers & also met with Edward Kennedy about the hidden civilian casualties. Reports state Dave was killed by Viet Cong, investigations Show he was most likely assassinated by Americans.

Balaban finally allows himself to meet like-minded people (Americans against the war IN Vietnam) and together they write a letter to the president. Balaban begins to feel that even though he's there to help people in Vietnam, this can send mixed messages to the people and he and others can be viewed as part of America's Pacification program--which was a large war strategy.

It’s strange to read of the potpourri of people gathered in Vietnam who are not soldiers- mixing with military & CIA. Balaban notes contradiction after contradiction as he escapes a party of civilian girls and soldiers by ascending to the roof where his CIA friend burns secrets.

Balaban questions American involvement in a small slice of earth so far away. Befriending a CIA agent who feels the same, the cosmic answers come from the market where they possibly see an older woman standing and peeing.

Balaban speaks of his upbringing & intersections w/violence that make his ascension to Harvard that much more surreal.
Then, Balaban credits a 4 minute spectacle of Robert McNamara, a major architect in the Vietnam War, as his catalyst for becoming a Conscientious Objector in Vietnam.

Balaban joined the International Voluntary Service through the Peace Corps & went to Vietnam. How did he have the nerve to walk 6 miles, alone, in the countryside during his first month? Did he tell anyone of his brief ‘capture’ potentially by the Vietnam Cong- or was this revealed in the publishing of the book? Does he regret these choices now?

I'm finished with Usagi Yojimbo Book 1: I love the stories of young Usagi and his Sensei. While reading, the little lies and trials Usagi goes through, you KNOW it's a bad idea--it's almost like dramatic irony. You think you know the outcome--but you don't. Young Usagi always learns a lesson and admits his mistakes.

Zelia, a spirited young girl who has to do EVERYTHING the hard way, early on faces the loss of her village and the security of her mentor, Mama Agba. While Adeyemi drops the reader in the center of an ongoing conflict, Zelia's troubles seem to really begin when she meets her foil character, Amari. Will the two unlikely companions, along with Zelia's brother, Tzain, be able to restore magic?

After reading the section on Board Games- I’m thinking of adding a choice project for The Crucible where students can design their own game-

*Design anchor activities that the whole class completes that relates to the learning experience and then have small group mini-lessons to address unique learning needs in the classroom
* Create a poster/chart--what to do before you ask the teacher
*When beginning differentiation--start small by dividing the class in half and having two learning groups so that you can later manage more

Barbie chapter~ interesting to look at various occupations- changes in ‘dream homes ‘

Power, belonging, freedom, fun, and survival.
I feel there are more needs than this- excelling at something is not always power- yet it is imortant

I’ve used variations of the personal agenda for certain students-but I think I will add more details and be more consistent w/specific students who struggle with attention, organization, and time management.

Jack is somewhat pathetic & while I want to scream at him, there’s something that makes me want to see him come out of this in a better place. At this moment, I’m wondering if he’s dead- & if that is a better space for him.
