Chapter II, The Medici Bank and its Economic Background introduces the reader to key concepts utilized throughout the study, such as the gild system.

Among other topics, it discusses how in Florence during the reign of Walter of Brienne in 1343, the government debt became so large that it was consolidated into a rolling public debt known as the monte comune, or public fund. Have a great day everyone!

I just finished the introduction to Raymond de Roover's remarkable study that was originally published in 1963 and is an expanded edition of an earlier study he had written in 1948.

The writing is very clear and easy to follow, and the first chapter provides historical background on the Medici of Florence and other successful banking clans active during the period. Have a wonderful day everyone!

There are three dialogues included in this selection of Seneca's prose works - Consolation to Helvia, On Tranquility of Mind and On the Shortness of Life - each of them was dedicated to either a loved one or a close friend of Seneca, and all of them are very positive and upbeat. Have a great day everyone!
