Originally published in 1978 as an expanded form of a well-researched doctorate thesis, Dale Kent's The Rise of the Medici: Faction in Florence, 1426-1434 is a one-of-a-kind academic study which focuses on the complex system of political and personal relationships in place during the period when the Medici became the most powerful political party in Renaissance Florence.

Chapter II, The Medici Bank and its Economic Background introduces the reader to key concepts utilized throughout the study, such as the gild system.

Among other topics, it discusses how in Florence during the reign of Walter of Brienne in 1343, the government debt became so large that it was consolidated into a rolling public debt known as the monte comune, or public fund. Have a great day everyone!

I just finished the introduction to Raymond de Roover's remarkable study that was originally published in 1963 and is an expanded edition of an earlier study he had written in 1948.
