I wonder how this novella is going to justify its existence. Frankly, I liked the ending of This is Not a Test, so I really wonder what the purpose of this epilogue is.

Honestly Sloane could’ve been a great protagonist for a series. Her character is so suited to this.

Fresh chapter on page 100 and a fresh chapter on page 200. My OCD is extremely pleased… All of these characters are really unraveling. This story is starting to play out like Silent Hill, almost.

This is such a unique piece of zombie media. It’s kind of like the walking dead but the zombies are more like a narrative device.

Giving me post-surgery flashbacks. I hate that feeling.

I wonder if we’re ever going to learn anything about her dad. He’s so genuinely evil it makes me wonder how he got that way. Men that behave like that usually wear their resentments on their sleeve.

Courtney Summers I’m sorry for whatever happened to you to make you want to write stories like this. (Probably nothing, horror writers are always so happy.)

This book opens up like getting shot out of a damn cannon.

These last 60 pages have been great but I’m not sure they justify the pacing of the 100 pages before it

I like Charlotte and I understand that there’s no going back to Sabine’s perspective, but I didn’t expect this to be the whole rest of the book. It’ll have to wrap up with a pretty good conclusion to justify another hundred pages of Charlotte backstory.

Sabine really is one of the most compelling female characters I’ve ever read. Even though her perspective will likely never come up again, I can feel what she is thinking through Charlotte’s perspective. She has been so perfectly characterized that you know exactly what she’s thinking, intending, and doing even though it’s not there.

This is going to be such a good arc. Charlotte is such a different person than Sabine, but they have such similar circumstances. The years that Sabine spent being constantly victimized by her family and society made her so harsh and spiteful. Charlotte is all of the circumstances but none of the sharpness that Sabine carries.

“Three women, all linked by one common thread…” these bitches is gay! Good for them!

Alice’s sections feel so much shorter than Sabines. As soon as I get sucked in I get pulled out. :(

There’s so much meaning in everything that is done and said in this book. That sex scene with Sabine was unbelievably good and full of narrative importance. It bummed me out when Alice doesn’t kill that girl who called her a slur but I also realize that it shows how different Alice is from Sabine. She will not take from people without very solid reason.

That was the best vampire transformation sequence I have ever read and I have read a lot of vampire transformation sequences. In a very small amount of pages, one of the most incredible and riveting payoffs to a story has been reached. She is my new favorite vampire.

Queer women in period pieces are always portrayed as so rebellious. I’m really taken with this interpretation of historical queerness that doesn’t exist in spite of the times but functions within it. María is rebellious in her way, but she’s not ignorant of her position. I think that is a much stronger portrayal than ones who treat queerness like it is unprecedented historically and therefore rebellious.
