Before independence the colonized painter was insensitive to the
national landscape. He favored therefore the nonrepresentational or, more
often, specialized in still life. After independence his desire to reunite with
the people confines him to a point by point representation of national reality
which is flat, untroubled, motionless, reminiscent of death rather than life.
