it has taken me this long to realize that, yes, i actually have read the original. the travelling on the diff moons did it for me

so far the premises are pmo really bad... u mean she's not going to go to the scribe quadrant simply bc her mom said no? girl get up and have a backbone?? and then once she's there and people are trying to help her leave she's all like "stop underestimating me asshole" like HUH??? also this entire system is just twisted. like tf u mean ur sending 20% of kids to their deaths on the parapet? what an inefficient society

beautifully written and well-researched look into indigenous Akha way of life. really makes me think about the place of cultural assimilation and segregation in a rapidly modernizing society. can't believe these events really only took place 50 years ago!

this is my first time reading on Libby!
very classic YA so far. predictable but in a cute way

*POTENTIAL SPOILERS* it was so juicy and good until about pg 300, <spoiler>where now the story structure feels lazy (like whats up with the sudden trauma dumping? is everything to be blamed on a tragic backstory?) and the author seems to just be pulling on trauma as a plot device... that one chapter about alice made me feel rlly uncomfortable</spoiler> honestly disappointed at the way this part of the book is written

SOOOO FREAKING GOOD
The angst and anxiety described by Alice when it comes to academia and her social place in it (versus Peter) is actually the most heartbreaking and relatable thing ever. I want to live a day in r f kuangs mind so so badly

I GASPED

I hear the academic/overexplaining tone that so many people dislike about kuang heavy in this one. (And idc) I can just tell the romantic subplot is gonna be so juicy I’m already curling my toes in a pride and prejudice manner

progress is slow ... school is starting ...

the stream of consciousness narration is done expertly. this is a coming of age novel. i like how selin is teetering on edges trying to settle her values and beliefs in life - it makes me feel seen. i wonder how much of selin's thoughts the author has thought of authentically herself, and how much of this is just fiction. this is easily a high effort read if you want to get absorbed in the beauty of selin's narration

started reading this before i realized it's actually a sequel but that won't stop me now. some pure gold wisdom and good humor in these first couple of pages: "Why was there no department of love?"

Very rich so far. Going on hiatus while I move into college!

so i have learned that this is NOT a ya novel. also fantastic world building (description of magic, social hierarchy) so far, but i am lowkey getting bored bc everything thus far has just felt like a set-up for something big to happen later

the second hand embarrassment is so strong

the mc is SO annoying rn but i have this tingly feeling that she will eat her words and change and flourish as the book develops... i hope this is a good one
