audiobooks are such a cheat code - in all the downtimes, walks to class, etc the book just flies by

Been unable to put this down. The smoothness with which Natalie’s arrogant narration passes into my head is incredible. Honestly, some of what she says hits dangerously close to truth, and when she crosses over into moral gray space, the stuff that allows people to believe in a cult, I marvel at her confidence. She portrays some of the worst things that human ego can twist Christianity into. Love the writing style

the passage about paolo (51-52) hit me with a ponder-and-LOL. love this so far. kuang is so good at a flawed protagonist. soo glad i went to her book talk!

i really like how the author includes many small details about everyday life (like the letters in the bathroom fading); it makes this story approachable when it is otherwise difficult to relate to. hard to read in the sense that there's violent content but easy to read in the sense that the prose is simple to understand

it's quite healing to be reading this book near the time i'm turning 20; the kind of book that i'm excited to revisit in 10, 20, 30 years to see how my reflections will change

somehow every page seems like something i've read before, in the sense that i've walked down the same coming-of-age pathways and have vaguely shared selin's inner monologue. it incites a lovely sort of present nostalgia, and because i'm self-obsessed, i am in love with this feeling. also: rf kuang shared that taipei story was loosely inspired by batuman's narrative voice and i'm only getting more excited

i love it. reminds me of virginia woolf - makes me feel less alone in how well selin's coming of age is captured - but it's modern and funny. i wonder how batuman curates this perfect mesh of overlaid stories in this order. and i really like the -mis monologues + the orchestra story. im amazed at how, in just 1.5 pages, such a full resounding story of universal loss could be conveyed so simply in a naive lens.

Very entertaining and humorous!

very bland so far

both mc and love interest seem like mary sues. especially xavier,, why is he so perfect right off the bat? i'm loving their interactions, but their love story was just too quick and they are both too unflawed as people to be realistic. it irks me. also a lot of unnecessary pop culture references

notes: this feels like straight revenge fantasy. the author seems to have a certain ideal ending for their characters in mind, and everything just streams this way while relying on extreme gender politics in the first place to justify that streaming. i would love to see more on the state of general revolution instead of zetian's straight prowess. rushed romances. also this shouldn't be classed as YA imo

This book has been on my tbr for such a long time!! So far, this vengeful tone is DELIVERING
