Halfway through chapter 3 in the audio book and the story is great and the narrator is AWFUL. i will try again with the print edition.

Why does everyone want me to like this book? My dad wants me to like this book. My book club wants me to like this book. Most of all this book wants me to like this book. It's like one giant insufferable wink. I hate it.

just started part 3. ehh

I was really excited to start this because it came highly recommended, but so far it's...not great? The plot is "Renaissance X-Men" (which upon further reflection would make an amazing art series/cosplay/crossover fic). The writing is overwrought and wordy and I don't care about the main character at all.

Did this seriously win the Pulitzer? I'm halfway through and sure not understanding it.

I'm finding this really hard to get through

If you liked the rai-kirah trilogy, this deals with a number of the same themes: loyalty to complicated people, power dynamics, not-fully-understood magic. I am reading this without having read the previous book in the "duet" and not finding it too difficult to pick up the threads (yet). So far the bromance between Valen and the king is not nearly at the level of Seyonne/Aleksander...but then, not much is.

OK. The sequel to this book is called "Shades of Gray." I stumbled across that book because I was looking for a different one at the library, and some genius librarian had put "Shades of Gray" on an endcap. "Smooth move," I thought. "I *have* to pick this up now." Upon looking it up on Goodreads, I learned that a) it was a sequel so I should probably start with the first one and.....

So far I'm liking this wayyy more than Middlesex, which probably kills any lit cred I had left.

How does anyone read this without guilt? I'm sitting near the window that looks out to the park, the birds are visiting my feeder and chattering adorably, and the light is hitting the neighboring building just so, and my face is buried in this ebook where Dillard is admonishing me to go look at the beauty in nature. And instead I am reading about someone else's experience. So bizarre.

Rambly (this is basically a bunch of monologues by Feynman that somebody tape recorded and transcribed), but interesting nonetheless.

This is basically Gabriel Garcia Marquez on Mars. Except that Gabo did it better. Argh. Will keep slogging, just in case..

so far this is kind of boring?

so far, I'm enjoying this a LOT more than her memoir of a few years later.
