A good synthesis of what happened in the West so far. It ties the various actions together quite well and creates a clearer view of the big picture.

I am already frustrated with the organization of this book. It speaks already of his relationship with his foster sister, but no information has been given as to why he is a foster child. The author seems like he is a much better military historian than a biographer.

Fairly light reading with just enough of New Mexico thrown in to keep it interesting.

Just read the chapter on the murder of Pat Garrett. It was very interesting how the lives of land barons intersected, often ending in bloodshed and violence, even after the Lincoln County War. Billy the Kid is the best known, but there were plenty of fascinating people in southern New Mexico.

It took me a while to figure out the structure of this book. Before I did, it seemed unconnected and random. But now that I have figures it out (The Voice of Reason followed by a short story,) it is clearer and much more enjoyable. Maybe a table of contents might have helped?

Vintage Abbey. I love the parts about Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos. I find his cast of characters fascinating.

I struggle with Faulkner but it is good to challenge oneself every now and then.

Sometimes a bit repetitive but overall a fascinating concept.

Much better than I anticipated!

And now to switch gears a bit .... A strictly plot driven western.
