“if you wish me to never look at your picture again, i am content. i have always you to look at.”

“every flake and film of colour seemed to me to reveal my secret. there was love in every line, and in every touch there was passion. i grew afraid that the world would know of my idolatry.”

“it often seems to me that art conceals the artist far more completely than it ever reveals him.”

every man in this book is insufferable: vain, unbearable, and completely unlikable

however really enjoyed this chapter! finally getting into the heart of things

“love is a more wonderful thing than art”

“there are only two kinds of people who are really fascinating - people who know absolutely everything, and people who know absolutely nothing”

“what are you without your art? nothing.”

least favorite chapter yet, but still had some standout quotes

“experience was of no ethical value. it was merely the name we gave to our mistakes”

“the only artists i have ever known who are personally delightful are bad artists. good artists give everything to their art, and consequently are perfectly uninteresting in themselves”

“people who only love once in their lives are really shallow people”

interesting analysis of feeling vs thought: the distinction between them and their intersection👌🏻

i finished the general introduction! it was a little too long in my opinion, but i do think that thoroughly understanding the context of the novel and the tribulations he faced because of his time will definitely inform the way i read the novel.
