The descriptions are the best part - it’s like a valentine postcard of Edinburgh! But some of the characters are annoying (Pippa needs to be taught that bossiness is neither polite nor kind). And I don’t love some of the anti -Christian sentiment.

Content warning: the bride is 16 when she first has marital relations with her (adult) husband. The scene is not described graphically, and the bride is not harmed or injured.

Closed door romance- yay!

This is lovely. I was initially worried, because the very first page basically tells you who she will end up with. But the obstacles between them are believable and not contrived. The key characters are likable, and the descriptions of the setting are wonderful. I felt like I was on holiday in England.

Set in Cornwall, which I love.

Reminds me of The Shell Seekers esp the relationship between the main character and her granddaughter. The main character is a stepmother in a contentious relationship with her younger stepdaughter but a close relationship with her granddaughter.

And of course the very next chapter addresses this precise issue, and the way it affects not only the primary couple but each of the supporting characters as well, and brings it all to a satisfactory resolution.

This is so frustrating! I hate it when two people in a relationship make decisions based on what the *assume* the other person thinks or wants, instead of communicating about it.
Also, the book treats getting very drunk or high as something normal instead of a problem.

A bit slow to start, with lots of characters to keep track of, but a lovely sense of place.

Lovely. A perfect Christmas read.

I’d forgotten how much I dislike suspenseful thrillers. Had to skip ahead and read the last two chapters.

It’s been a long time since a book has made me weep.
