The essays are all dated in the 1990s to 2001, which means I currently feel like I’m reading old magazine articles. Franzen was able to capture a unique period in time that is relevant - mostly - as a point of reference in a continuous arc of history unfolding. The essay about the Chicago postal service was full of archived news. His essay on cigarettes is making me question why I don’t smoke cigarettes. Irony.

Interesting read so far, a man turned into a blood thirsty beast confessing to a Lutheran minister, the tale told through a recovered journal. The opening to the book frames the manuscripts as part of tenure-track professor’s research, made important to her as the author is her great grandfather. That framing does net yet make sense.
