Robert is on page 42 of 126 of Honest Prayer
"The life of prayer is for me the responsibility to open myself in love to the transcendent in everyone I meet. It is to meet life with all that I have and all that I am. It is to be ready to encounter people, to participate in events, to live in relationships. To live the life of prayer is thus to be vulnerable. It is to run the risk of being hurt in order to love. It is to love life as my meeting place with God" 29

"A literal Bible presents me with far more problems than assets. It offers me a God I cannot respect, much less worship; a deity whose needs and prejudices are at least as large as my own. I meet in the literal understanding of Scripture a God who is simply not viable, and what the mind cannot believe the heart can finally never adore. Is there a truth beyond biblical literalism to which my life can be dedicated?" 24

"I wonder then, against the background of my own paternal experiences, if the absence of Joseph led Jesus to emphasize God as Father in a way that I could never do. My earthly father was all could ever wish for in a father, and I do not give that name too lightly to another, not even to a heavenly Father, not even to God" (39).

Just finished the 'Rubaiyat of Omar Khayam.' Amazing poetry of an eleventh century mathematician. "Heed not to-morrow, heed not yesterday; The magic words of life are HERE and NOW--O fools, that after some to-morrow stray!" "So I be written in the Book of Love/ I have no care about that book above/Erase my name, or write it, as you please--/ So I be written in the Book of Love."
