As a writer myself…holy fuck. The level of craft at work here is insane. So many different things are going on, tying up. I think…this might be the greatest fantasy epic. Ever. Maybe that’ll change after I read Malazan but bloody hell.

Wow. Sanderson actually did it. He made Perrin a good character. I haven’t liked Perrin since probably book 5. Which was…6 books ago. I love my wife! I miss my wife! I’m becoming a wolf! He was so one-note (not really but definitely boring and whiny). Mat and Rand still beat him but at least I can stomach him again. Now that’s good writing.

Sanderson made Egwene actually engaging. …Wtf. Actual witchcraft, sold his soul to the Dark One.

I love being hard. Hard as steel. Also idk if I’m missing something but Egwene’s plot since book 6 has been boring

Damn so THATS what the titular Slog is. If you take a step back from the back-and-forths in the dialogue and descriptions…literally nothing plot wise has happened. The ONLY thing so far has been one of the channelers with Mat is like hey I’m sensing someone using Saidar from super far away wtf it must be an insane amount. Anyways, back to doing nothing.

this book is alright I still don’t get the whole slog part. Maybe next book is where it’ll really get bad. I’m not done yet but SPOILER if they actually cleanse the male half of the source this book holy shit that would be so sick SPOILER. Also weird and…wholesome…? That Rand’s has three wives. I mean it was all consensual so whatever I guess lol. Speaking of not consensual, that damn woman and poor Mat.

Chapter 24 is fire. This shit is NOT a slog. I think people only say that because when these were getting published they were shorter and taking longer to come out. Once again I am attacking First Law for being a slog. And, might I add The Licanius Trilogy lmao. Jordan at least knows how to keep his characters interesting.

BOLD statement. I’ve seen so many books talking about slog (and to be fair I’m doing the audiobooks during work) but this isn’t so bad. Lord of Chaos up to Path of Daggers has been fine. I fear for Crossroads of Twilight, however. If you want talk about slog…First Law series comes to mind. Only halfway bearable part was Glotka’s POV.

Eh it’s a bit boring. Only good parts are Rand and Mat plotlines so far. I love how Mat is trying to figure out how to make this world’s guns lol.

Dumai’s Wells going wild. It’s crazy how good he can do certain things yet make most characters so unbearable with all the misogyny and misandry it just gets old.

For a 1700s Chinese novel…it feels kind of modern? It’s starting off really strong.

The worldbuilding is already way cooler than The Martian. But I detest the humor and characters are super flat.

Damn the quality between the first book and this one is a major step up. Also Caeden is the best viewpoint by far.
