This book finds its success in the blending of genres. A detective-led mystery with fantastical subject matter. The novel is set in a high school; it features a romance and is centered around a dynamic between sisters who share an unfinished past.

To anyone justifying the racism that drips from this text; anyone calling it, "historically appropriate" for 1936 or, even, "indicative of the Civil War era" -- I point you to the wide spread abolitionism that already existed among real living people in the 1800s -- pre 1860s even! I'm talking about folks who were already generations ahead of 20th century MITCHELL, let alone her despicable 19th century protagonist.

Frankly, at best I would say Scarlett O’Hara has a personality disorder (Histrionic?)

AND it’s offensive that Margaret Mitchell uses this text to create some kind of case for Scarlett as feminist archetype. I reject the brand of patriarchal white feminism being served up here.

This is one of the most acutely racist books I’ve ever read. I am shocked that anything else gets said to describe this book other than, “frighteningly bigoted and amoral.”
