I decided to try a local horror book club and, after signing up for their February discussion of “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” I discovered it was the second in a series so, here I am, trying to get through this one so I can get to the next one before the discussion!

“Later in life I would think long and hard about the ways we humans impose our narrow definitions of acceptable behavior on each other, and the way we're taught as children to never speak of socks, or long-legged crabs for that matter, out of context.”

I tried. I really wanted to make it through this one. But I’m so bored by it. I appreciate the way the author highlighted the gross conditions the Jills were forced to adhere to, but this mystery just isn’t captivating me.

I could help but picture Megamind plummeting from the sky, and I know that isn’t right at all.

I feel neither amused or intrigued. I don’t think that’s the novel’s fault. I just don’t think spy stories are my thing. I thought this might be the exception because it sounded fun, but I cannot convince myself to care at this point.

Finally—a book that’s managed to shock me.

Reading this one for Angela, who was so good to me when I was a lost and hurting teenager. She used to be a Buffalo Jill, and she passed away unexpectedly about 10 years ago.

This definitely isn’t what I had hoped it would be.

I’ve gasped in shock and horror a few times already.

“Loss of trust is similar to heartbreak. Both lay bare some internal wound, both make us feel older than we are.”

Okay, Delaney, you have a little over 100 pages to redeem yourself because I am currently displeased with the direction this just went in.

"It's like that sometimes," he says quietly. "Sometimes, when you
wear a mask too long, you find it sticks to the skin."
He says it so seriously that I just nod again, unable to tell him that the real mask, the real stage, is somewhere a long way from this room.

Maybe we can get James to disappear while riding the carousel, too. One can only hope.

I am seriously scared for Claire.

"It's a funny thing. As soon as you stand out of the crowd, that's the moment folks assume they know everything about you. At precisely the same moment, they fail to see anything."

Kind of hate the formatting. Regardless, I’m hooked.

I hope this book eradicates my confusion about Lillian before it ends.

How come this guy’s smart historical horrors don’t get more attention?
