This book doesn't have a clear antagonist

I feel like this book is gaslighting me, and not in the smart way.

The text is doing a lot of telling and not a lot of showing. The way Leah describes herself is not how she actually is. The text tells us that the LOW is to be feared, but he doesn't actually do anything to be afraid of? And Leah didn't actually do anything to make her brother disappear. This needed more background.

2. Coulter set up as a sexist antagonist in bk2 just for nothing to come of it is a wasted opportunity to show young girls that sexism is morally wrong

4. Seth's refusal to mature is aggravating atp. It's also sexist that Kendra has to always be the mature one&Seth can constantly regress.
5. Mull thinks attractive women are evil.

This isnt a real novel. It’s more like listening to a podcast or a video.

I was expecting this to me more…witchy. It’s mostly just historical fiction.

As an adult, it’s hella weird that Mull made the 12 and 14 year old protagonists spend a good 20-40 pages naked, and then continually mentioned how naked and exposed they were.

That’s weird, right?

This is less a nonfiction study exploring how people became so selfish, and more One Man's Journey, and that's disappointing.

I picture Vanessa Santoro has Vanessa from Phineas and Ferb lmfao

It's really weird how Coulter acts like being a sexist jerk is an "agree to disagree" thing. Kendra, of course, opposes it like a baddie. And Seth agreeing with Coulter? Ew. But it's super weird that Mull made one adult character like a diehard sexist, and Kendra (the child, who has already saved their asses once) just has to take it. I don't remember how this book goes, so hopefully Coulter changes.

I'm only reading this to complete a challenge, because I didn't like The Extraordinaries trilogy and I'm not particularly interested in this one yet.

The chapters on this one are so much longer than the first (20-30 pages each). It really bogs down the flow of the story, even though a lot of the pages so far have been action packed. Also just found out Mull is Mormon, which makes sense in hindsight. Also, Kendra hating Vanessa immediately because she gets Seth's attention is a big ick.

One particularly problematic choice of Mull’s that I’m noticing as an adult is that, so far, ugly beings have always been evil and beautiful beings have usually been associated with goodness (although the fairies are vain and selfish, they’re still Good unless they became imps, then they’re ugly and Evil). I know these are old kids books, but c’mon 🫠

Kinda over the arena now. Just waiting for Haymitch to discover how to use the force field to his advantage.

Second Quarter Quell started off with a bang.

I really wish Collins wouldn’t have forced the Covey back into this. This first chapter felt forced and contrived. It was difficult to get through with the exposition. I did like that the Abernathys are a juxtaposition to the Everdeens (Katniss’s gen.)
