I like Lyra’s story… curious to see where it goes

I cannot get over how beautifully written this book is. I can not only see the scene but feel and taste it. It’s like the author has made it alive! It has been too long since I’ve read a book this well written. It’s inspiring my own books and I keep taking breaks to write myself.

So, I know it’s fantasy and religion isn’t meant to be exact, but it does bother me as a Catholic that the religion in this book is so similar to Catholicism but then isn’t. Like, the fact a man in very possibly grave sin can take communion repeatedly is a sacrilege. I see the author isn’t Catholic so he’s possibly not aware how Catholics could view this, but I personally don’t find that part sits well with me.

I feel like if this book were fantasy and not set in modern day England, I could brush off the complete ridiculousness of the rules like how this underage child signed a contract she cannot get out of even though it was under duress and without parental approval. Likewise, the one girl passing out at breakfast and her mom just saying it is because she likes her sweets, nothing is seen as an emergency.
