Difficult not to be incensed by how condescending Darlington is here. So prescient in the thinking of today where The Republican especially seem to think that a small handful of white guys know what’s best rather than the “common man”
It would have been interesting to read here that Stevens had answers to the questions but declined to share them because of his position.

The idea of thinking deeply about something that you had know for years. Is it an age thing? Is it having a partner (even friends) that would posit this question to you? For the character…is it leisure time when your brain isn’t fixated on all the tasks at hand?

Funny the formality of all the sentences back and forth with each of them ending then with each others names.

One need hardly dwell on the catastrophic possibility of uttering bantering remark only to discover it wholly inappropriate.

These characters are the worst kind of “poor me” people…I can barely stand to read this. Reminds me terribly of the “takers” in Ayn Rands books: those people that the protagonists are fighting against.
