It has taken me two thirds of this book to warm to Ralph Waldo Emerson. That is chapter 56/57. Now I realize why is such a revered man of letters, especially, a philosophical spokesperson.

The intent of this book is to make sad people be comforted by reading and understanding poetry. Norman Rosenthal is a generous man; he is a psychotherapist and uses his experiences to explain the chosen poems.

I read poetry to visit the transcendent world of geniuses. Rosenthal's choices and discussions satisfy me.

some people forget that the characters populating these 2 short stories are based on real, creepy, often sadistic, often repulsive people. Place them in the context an equally real, creepy, commonly sadistic and always repulsive period of history and the reader understands the filth he has walked into.
