This is turning out to be far more intriguing than I expected. Fr Longenecker brings the reader along in his exploration of ancient tribes and civilizations to determine who were the Magi. It’s not overly heady, making it an easy, enjoyable read.

I like that Fr. Longenecker addresses the dichotomy between "believers with blinders" and "scholars and skeptics". It's the approach I wish Colm Toibin had taken, whose book, "The Sign of the Cross: Travels in Catholic Europe", I'm also reading. I like Father's desire to find that middle ground as he seeks the true story of the Magi. So far this is a good read as his writing style is one that flows well.

I knew going into this book that the author is a lapsed Catholic. As a Catholic I'm drawn to understanding skeptics. In the first chapter he writes of his growing skepticism as a teen. What is disappointing me so far is that as he writes of his observations of those who practice the faith they're just that...observations. He isn't delving into why they believe. As I continue to read I hope he goes there.
