This is the first Stephen King book I’ve read actually. I’m amazed at what a talented writer he is! Because horror and thrillers are not my forte, I just assumed he was hyped up a bit. He’s not. He’s a very gifted writer, and he has an amazing talent for character development that I’ve not come across yet. Maybe Barbara Kingsolver has this innate talent, but Steven King can do it so much more quickly!

30% of the way in and regardless of the fact that I am 53, this coming of age story has really captured me.

Chapter 17 begins with blatant sexual harassment, which nobody recognizes as such. This may be we’ll be my last Grisham novel. Sad that the old man author can’t keep up with the times.

“The exotic Asian girl’s eyes…” I WAS NOT Assuming the ENTIRE staff is white and then throwing in a SINGLE ASIAN in cosmetology? Seriously - this writer must live in a small white town in the Midwest. There are people of races other than white everywhere - ESPECIALLY IN ALASKA. A good portion of Alaska IS native Alaskan (which is Asian). Asians aren’t exotic - this writer is though!

Good so far. George is the best character, but Laurel and Aiden are a bit condescending towards him at times. He’s not a baby or stupid

What in the world is “disproportionate sexism”??? Disproportionate to what?

Wow! I don’t even like science fiction. This book is SO involved. A friend loaned it to me and I had to buy my own copy so I could make notes. Seriously good so far

Referring to her parents, Elsa says, “They didn’t live me; I never knew why. I wonder if she sees me in the same way they did. I could never do anything fright in their eyes either.”

Love. It becomes at the beginning of her life and at the end of yours. God is cruel that way.

Chapter 42 - Finn screamed like a girl.
SERIOUSLY? Girls scream just like men, boys and women when they’re in excruciating pain. I can’t believe you even went there author!

Not going as well as I had hoped. My library hold ran out before I could finish it and it’s not one I’m willing to put at the top of my list to request again. Generally bad, unlikable characters is not its only problem.
