This is the guy - a federal agent at the time, I think? - who they met when Jessie was… maybe around 14/15? In the ‘Mystery Ranch’ book.

Then she moves on to talking about him being (mentally) slow because he didn’t talk much, pretty much one word answers. Maggie’s kind of a bitch.

I think maybe this is thie Dilbert (?) guy that helped fix up the house - he was the same way when introduced.

I thought it was a year after the last book, thinking that was their summer vacation - but they were doing homework during their trip.

Squinting. Honestly a bit surprised - usually in kids books, the ages are static. Henry was in high school the last book, now he’s in college? So this is the summer after the last book, then?

I guess, logistically, it makes sense to write kid-friendly books where the main audience is the grown-up reading it. For adults, some kid’s books get old fast.

Still seems like an odd show to adapt for a picture book.

I wasn’t expecting the threat of running into cannibals to be popping up in my Boxcar Children’s book, but it’s come up in discussion a few times now, and treated as a genuine (if unlikely) possibility by the kids.

I guess, in the abstract, they are on some random desert island (Caribbean?), but it seems such a strange concern. And these are usually such mild-mannered books.

This world is a vaguely Victorian-ish period? Hard to say the time period. So what has she been wearing, if she’s not wearing corsets, which would be the default undergarment based on the dresses we see.

Does the writer not know they were everyday wear, maybe?

So first the two girls are the only ones out of the group of 7 that don't have their own knife for carving. Now, there's not enough fishing lines so instead of taking turns they 'get' to just sit and do nothing while everyone else has fun.

That’s infantilizing. Well meant, I suppose - probably to show him being a ‘gentleman’. But they’re adult women, presumably, not children needing to be sheltered.

He was a little condescending about the elves, too, assuming they were ignorant and not just that the bathing offer could be a cultural difference or something.

I swear this is, like, 90% a harem romance except it doesn’t actually cross over into romance.
Which, fair enough, he is planning to leave and go home when they figure out how to return. I imagine at some point they’ll have a plot line showing how he ended up there in the first place.

Really? The big school dance, and the writing team basically just left him in his school uniform, while all the girls get customized dresses.

Granted, I’m not the most familiar with these characters, but it feels like rather than having distinct personalities of their own, they just created a boarding school story with generic characters and slapped SW & Agatha’s names & appearance overtop.

I get mysteries were popular, but some of the Boxcar ones are pretty bad. They just happen to race the dogs on the spot something’s hidden on? And the dogs just happen to smell the clue & dig it up?

The mom just… agreeing to let her kid stay at a strangers for some unnamed amount of time is weird, too (presumably to keep the rich heirs company, I guess…).

Tho it sounds like all her filling are made from canned fruit, too, which is… a choice. Hopefully they meant pre-made fillings - some of those can at least be decent (aplle’s generally pretty mid).

Not sure about the logic of opening a pie shop instead of a café/diner. Especially if the miners are going there for lunch. Everyone will be sick of fruit pies soon. Even if she just branched into savoury ones, like pot pies.

So the kid insisted on a big room with an extra bed, and now he’s not even planning on staying there?

I wonder if Mike’s mom is dating the investigator guy.
