Better than I expected. A solid (albeit secular) take on finding and experiencing internal and physical alone-ness. Part memoir, part how-to.

A re-read. This was one of the most important books I read last year. I think it’s Crouch’s best work to date, which is saying a lot.

It was more esoteric than I expected. I know about Zena through the Catherine Project, which is superb at making the liberal arts accessible to everyone. This book does the opposite, but I don’t think it needed to.

Merton’s journals are some of the most introspective writing I’ve ever read. His journey from Columbia literature professor to Trappist monk is fascinating.

Not since Teresa of Avila has any Christian writer given us such a detailed view of the movements of their soul.
