Seems timely to read this particular collection of Didion's essays. She wrote admiringly, even lovingly, about personalities of the 1960s as different as Joan Baez and John Wayne. She was both sharp-eyed and romantic. Her prose is impeccable.

Listening to audiobook in English, finding it very distracting how many mispronunciations got past the producers. Did they save on headcount by using the same narrator for multiple editions?

"Enchanting" in the oldest sense, as in I am under the spell of this book. I have not been so taken with a story since...the last time I read a book by Gaiman.

I actually initiated conversation with friends based on the premise of this book. Must admit, however, that I also wondered if Atkinson just had a roaring good time playing, opting to run away from linear plot. Was this an extended game of "What if...."?

I hear a film is being made of this book with Jennifer Lawrence in the title role. Perhaps she can make something of that character, because the book's author surely didn't make her human.
