I bought this nearly 18 years ago and haven't read it yet, so I figured that I would give it a go. Not sure what to think so far, enjoying it though.

Don't really remember book one, I've read lots of book between them and now, including Fall of Light.
Enjoying it so far though and enjoying seeing early versions I do remember from the main Malazan series.

Loving this. Not sure how Jeff Vandermeer is simultaneously clearing things up whilst still keeping everything vague and horrifyingly unknowable. He has such a wonderful way with words and I'll definitely be reading more of his books.

Turns out I remembered even less about book 2 than I did book one.
Really good stuff, and dealing with heavy subjects in a way a lot of adult fantasy I've read doesn't even attempt.

Still reading this. Haven't read much of anything that isn't comics for months. Enjoying it when I do pick it up though.

It's taken me this long to actually grasp what is going on. I barely remember the first book and don't remember much of the main series, so I'm not sure how many of these are new characters or ones I've read about for many thousands of pages.
I'm enjoying seeing the birth of sorcery in this world, and fitting with how mysterious it all was in the main series, it is all very mysterious and unknowable now.

Reminded very much so far of The Bone Clocks in the blurring of every day life and surreal encounters with forces from outside our reality - in the ceiling, or Above - as well as the collection of linked shorter stories dealing with these issues. There's possibly something apocalyptic going on. Or there isn't.

My version has fewer pages than this one, but it isn't on here so we'll have to make to, eh. Figured getting the 3 paperback slipcase would be easier than carting the unwieldly single hardback around then got home and realised that the hardback is no bigger than any of Neal Stephenson's books and I carted Anathem's hardback around on the bus. Oh well. Wish me luck.

Jolly good fun. Bits are coming back to me now. Wish I remembered who Silk is and why the name Pung is so familiar. So basically this book is making me want to re-read the entire Malazan series.

Enjoying this rather a lot, even if I can't remember much about the Malazan series so I'm not sure which existing characters I'm reading about in this prequel or if I do know I can't remember what role they played. Good times.

Really enjoying this so far and it has also helpfully been recapping things from that last book that might be useful which is handy because I can barely remember that last book.

Enjoying this a lot more now. The star of the book is now The Land itself, rather than and of the characters. Though I am liking the idea of a guy thrown into a strange land, who is seen as a potential saviour and who whenever he is asked to do anything heroic just kinda shrugs his shoulders and goes 'meh, dunno what you're on about', even as everything goes to hell around him and people give everything they have.

So far so good. I knew this was 'high fantasy', a genre I've never really gotten on with beyond Lord of The Rings, but I wasn't expecting it to be so typical. Here's hoping the fact that the main character is supposedly an irredeemable asshole who doesn't even believe the whole thing is real adds a spin to it.

I just realised I someone in work lent me this over a year and a half ago. Better read it.
That said I've had someone's copy of Master and Margarita for nearly a decade.

During my year away I also re-read Infinite Jest, cementing it as my favourite book. There's just so much in there. So much comedy, horror and life. So much life and humanity.

I'm enjoying this so much I regret the fact I've spent most of the last month playing Saints Row 3 and GTA5 instead.
Hugo in chapter 2 was a thoroughly nasty piece of work, and I wonder if he'll return in some capacity later in the book.
It was also interesting to see where Holly ended up after the events of the first chapter too.
