"Take yourself by the scruff of your neck and shake off your incarnate laziness. Laziness is always seen in cravings for the high hour; we talk about working up to a time on the mount. We have to learn to live in the grey day according to what we saw on the mount." Chambers discussing a mountaintop experience and how we cannot let our feelings of laziness and boredom with daily life control us.

"Many of us are loyal to our notions of Jesus Christ, but how many of us are loyal to Him? Loyalty to Jesus means I have to step out where I do not see anything (cf. Matt. xiv. 29); loyalty to my notions means that I clear the ground first by my intelligence. Faith is not intelligent understanding, faith is deliberate commitment to a Person where I see no way."

"If the Spirit of God detects anything in you that is wrong, He does not ask you to put it right; He asks you to accept the light, and He will put it right. A child of light confesses instantly and stands bared before God; a child of darkness says-'Oh, I can explain that away.' When once the light breaks and the conviction of wrong comes, be a child of the light, and confess, and God will deal with the wrong;"

"Beware of an abandonment which has the commercial spirit in it-'I am going to give myself to God because I want to be delivered from sin, because I want to be made holy.'...Abandonment is not for anything at all. We have got so commercialized that we only go to God for something from Him, and not for Himself."

"The thing that tells in the long run for God and for men is the steady persevering work in the unseen, and the only way to keep the life uncrushed is to live looking to God. Ask God to keep the eyes of your spirit open to the Risen Christ, and it will be impossible for drudgery to damp you. Continually get away from pettiness and paltriness of mind and thought out into the thirteenth chapter of Sr. John's Gospel."

"Are you in the dark just now in your circumstances, or in your life with God? Then remain quiet. If you open your mouth in the dark, your will talk in the wrong mood: darkness is the time to listen."

"Am I as full of the extravagance of love to Jesus Christ as I was in the beginning, when I went out of my way to prove my devotion to Him?...Am I so in love with Him that I take no account of where I go? or am I watching for the respect due to me; weighing how much service I ought to give?"

The author just had the main character realize her male love interest IS NOT the answer to her heart problems. Instead, she has to put all her love, trust, and hope in God Himself. Just fell deeper in love with this book!!!

So, my dad was a Marine (is a Marine since even an ex-Marine is still a Marine) and he recommended I read this book to understand Marine Corps culture and why he does and says things I find odd. Yep! This book explains it! It is actually a fascinating study of the development of Marine Corps culture.

This little book is the best one written for piano teachers. I have read a few and this tiny work covers more important matters than the lengthy volumes. If you are a piano teaching, read this!

"How could we have guessed as we sat there-two middle-aged spinster and an old man-that in place of memories we were about to be given an adventure such as we had never dreamed of? Adventure and anguish, horror and heaven were just around the corner, and we did not know.

"Oh Father! Betsie! If I had known would I have gone ahead?"
