I had been wondering if it took me this long to finish this the first time I read it, and the answer is: almost. It's not a speed read, that's for sure

I've been putting this off long enough and am prepared to DNF if it's as bad as the second one. 800+ pages! Who has the time.

I'm pausing this for now because the audiobook is not a good option for me here. It's too dense to risk losing every few words because the car AC is louder than the narrator

I feel like I'm way too far in to DNF now, but this heroine is a newborn or an alien because she has absolutely the least logical reactions to everything happening around her and it's infuriating

This one is so hard for me bc religious hypocrisy makes real life supervillains, so reading about militant Christian theocracy being the biggest bad as a cautionary tale I'm just screaming inside like "dude I fucking know tell it to someone else who needs to hear it"

LOL at the bad Crescent City book winning the GRC Fantasy category when I bitched in my review about it even being in the running in the first place

This is the most I've ever struggled with an SJM book. Can't pinpoint why; it's the same kind of book she always writes, but I'm unmoved

Really, really glad I gave Sherry Thomas a second chance some months back because this book is proving to be delightful. And offering more evidence to the pile that the book of hers I hated was the exception rather than the rule.

Nesta makes for an interesting heroine, if not one that I like very much. I'm only halfway through, but so far I'm feeling like this book does some things that work and other things that don't in order to make her more sympathetic.

Really trying to soldier through this kidnapping plot and hope that Grace Draven finds a way to make it work

I don't completely h8 this and i'm going to finish it, but it's already evident that once i took the unexpectedly hard left from finding Shelly Laurenston/G. A. Aiken's writing amusing to instead finding it abrasive and juvenile, there's no coming back from that. It's better in this book than in that last Call of Crows book, but I'm ruined for it :\

This is peak Difficult Heroine and I absolutely adore it.

This POV just shifted from third-person to first-person in the middle of the chapter?? Without any kind of signal in the story as to why this would make sense???? Send help I do not understand

Every year something about the GC Awards has me aghast (usually related to the romance category tbh) and this year is no exception. Winning author Jennifer L. Armentrout is "allegedly" a plagiarist and identity thief and I can't believe she continues to have a career without this being more scrutinized:

I usually get drawn in pretty quickly to SJM books and that's not the case for this one so far. May have to come back to it later, in a different mood.

You think you know a lot of these things in a general sense, but having it all laid out this way is appalling.
