I think I'm about halfway through. I don't really care to finish.

Putting it back on the pile until I am in the right frame of mind to read it. I suspect I will love it then but may break it if I keep trying now.

Why does this book have 1012 pages. And were the other ones this bad?

110 pages in and... I don't like it. Has been marketed as a thriller and it's clearly not. I predict *spoilers ahead*


The nice boss is actually going to hit on her
Her brother and/or resident will die.
She will be the smartest bestest junior registrar ever who can read a bone tumour MRI in her first month of training with accuracy.

I think I even liked Sonia Henry's book more than this.

On my copy I'm actually up to page 274 of 650 pages. It is so far an interesting read but dense and I've wandered away from it frequently because there's just so much of it. I was hoping for a comprehensive history of Spain but this is more modern history with some throwbacks to prior eras. I'm persisting but in the way of someone who has an assignment die at the end of the month not as someone particularly enjoying.

I'm forcing myself to read these last 120 odd pages which is never a good sign. There are so many almost right elements to this book that I want to slap the editor that didn't tidy it up into what it could have been. Sheer obstinacy is the only thing forcing me to finish.

I don't want to give this 5 stars but nothing else feels appropriate.
