DNF - but a good book. Just a bit light on the history that I wanted (though the image plates were fantastic), it got to a point about page 100 where I felt I may as well just read the Life of Johnson.

What was good: description of a spy funeral was quite exciting. The inner politics of the secret service was done very excitingly in the climax scene. Bravo.

What was bad: for a book orbiting Eastern Europe it was a bit fucking ignorant - English - about it. Not one but two - two! - cliche’d descriptions of Polish grandmothers with faces like war zones. A bit rich when the English are the mingers of Europe.

Reread as it’s a smasher. Nice to internalise a bit more of the info this time
