Cam Kennedy is on page 28 of 157 of Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life
Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet. We have caused a lot of damage to the Earth. Now it is time for us to take good care of her. We bring our peace and calm to the surface of the Earth and share the lesson of love. We walk in that spirit.

Peace is not external or to be sought after or attained. Living mindfully, slowing down and enjoying each step and each breath, is enough.

Peace is already present in each step, and if we walk in this way, a flower will bloom under our feet with every step.

Realizing there is less than 3 weeks of summer break left after having been in a deep reading rut. Time to gather all of the easy summer reads that have been sitting on my shelf and get going again!

Food can satisfy only one need — to nourish the body. You can’t expect to get from it what it can’t give you. You need to deal with your other needs and issues more appropriately. That is your deeper responsibility to yourself.

Absolutely delightful so far.

As parents. We should prioritize helping our child label and accept difficult feelings—not fix them. Experiencing discomfort is the price we pay for a rich and meaningful life. pg75

Feelings are fleeting. They are not meant to be felt for any length of time. Joy is transient, and not at all the normal state of a person’s mind. Neither is sadness. This is a fundamental parenting challenge: to teach our kids to notice/name their uncomfortable feelings, and see them as moving states that ebb and flow—to accept and tolerate every feeling as a natural, normal part of the human experience. pg75

She was always deathly pale on arrival, in desperate need of sun. Then, in a few days, the island would work its magic on her—she’d swim in its sea, eat its fish and the fruits of its earth. A visceral reminder that Nature—while glorious and sustaining—was not the same thing as a woman. pg47

In case I’m speaking to a young person now, let me give you something to hold on to: do not despair at being different. For that very difference, initially a source of shame, so humiliating, and painful, will one day become a badge of honor and pride. pg27

Taking this really slow but so so much accessible and useful information so far. Also appreciate how easy this book is to digest, it has intuitive breaks that make it easy to pick up and set down a lot which is often how most parents have to read!

The larger the novel she read, the more she was able to disappear from the world, and all the people in it. Each novel was like a voyage she embarked on. She specifically looked for enormous books. Then she would be gone for a longer period of time. She might disappear for an entire winter.

Connell went home that night and read over some notes he had been making for a new story, and he felt the old beat of pleasure inside his body, like watching a perfect goal, like the rustling movement of light through the leaves, a phrase of music from the window of a passing car. Life offers up these moments of joy despite everything.

Because I am a NERD I am reading this while I watch the show for the third time. I admit, I am a fraud, having never read the book despite it being in my possession for years, instead overindulging on the adaption, repeatedly.

A highlight of my month, as I feel an unrealistic amount of excitement and anticipation about this obvious and unoriginal idea to read a novel and watch the adaption simultaneously.

At times I think of human relationships as something soft like sand and water, and by pouring them into particular vessels we give them shape…. But what would it be like to form a relationship with no preordained shape of any kind? Just to pour the water out and let it fall. pg100

They have a pill for it. They have an industry. They make millions. Did you know people get rich off of sadness? I want to meet the millionaire of American sadness. I want to look him in the eye, shake his hand, and say, “It’s been an honor to serve my country.”

Sometimes, when I am careless, I think survival is easy: you just keep moving forward with what you have, or what’s left of what you were given, until something changes — or you realize, at last, that you can change without disappearing, that all you had to do was wait until the storm passes over and you find that —yes— your name is still attached to a living thing.

“Woman can reconnect with an image of the Great Mother and herself, not as saccharine or sentimentalized, but as clear-eyed, firm, stalwart, straightforward, and steadfast…an image of woman mothering her children, mothering herself, rooted in her own strength, substance, and wisdom, rooted, through her own life, in the strength, substance, and wisdom of the Eternal Mother.”
