This enthralled me as a kid but it's much clunkier than I remember... Sure, it's a middle grade reader but also the main characters are of that golden-age YA mold where they're all a little too precocious and rigidly archetypical - the reluctant one, the bratty one, the baby - sort of if The Boxcar Children were set in afrofuturistic Zimbabwe. Fun to read a chapter once in a while but boring to read straight through.
