Halfway through the final book in the trilogy and I’m simultaneously really enjoying how “slice-of-life” it is, even if that slice of life is all about murder and magic, and also increasingly wondering how it is all going to wrap up in the next three hundred pages somehow

Somehow this book has made the act of biting someone horrifying for what it could imply about the character… but I’m sure it’s fineeee

Nice to see some of our characters reuniting after their storied journey across the world, especially Logen and his crew

Crazy to see the amount of development in Dogman from the last pages of the last book to the first pages of this one and how heavy the mantle of leadership wears on him but how well he wears it already

The worldbuilding in these books is absolutely amazing like essentially being dropfed little pieces of worldbuilding and relationships as the characters learn with Bayaz being the guide for both the reader and the characters, at least for the most part, it’s amazing

West has quickly become a favourite character after the last couple of chapters of him but it’s also made really clear how easy the union has it

Picking up pretty much where the last book left off is a nice feeling considering how the last book ended but we do still get to see our characters jump a little bit, a week at most, and see how they’re progressing Glokta’s the most interesting right now with him exploring a new city and culture in the office of superior inquisitor but I haven’t caught up with Logan and that group yet so we shall see

I want to see Jezel humbled so bad, I completely understand that the point of his character is that he has practically everything handed to him and that he’ll likely get humbled in the actual war and going through a journey mirroring Glokta but damn

I do love Bayaz and Logan and how quick a friendship they have developed even with all of Bayaz’s past and many mysterious still surrounding him and magic itself

One of the great things about multiple perspectives is seeing how different character view the world and the new things they encounter and it is done probably to the greatest effect I’ve ever read in this book especially with how pretty much all the perspectives are from different social standings or cultures and mostly view the others as savages or lesser than even Ferro who was slaved by her own people

I know nearly nothing about Bayaz… he is also one of the best characters but maybe I’m just bayiesed…

You know it’s a good book when every time it’s a different characters perspective they become your favourite character although Jezal’s story is currently the weakest even if I believe I can see where it’s going Ardee is an infinitely more interesting character currently

Getting that feeling when I read a Greek tragedy when you can see all the pieces coming together and start to gather the shape of the ending, the tragedy to come

The manipulation of the Technocore, the doomsday weapon, the truth of the ouster attack, and Father Duré vision in the labyrinth, what a sinister shape this end is beginning to take

Y’know I’m thinking my guess may be right but I’m definitely still missing something

About halfway through this main story and my theory right now is that the husband killed his wife and then had his mistress play the part of her which is why she was always hiding her face directly and why her parasol was left in the cafe however I can’t work out why the cat was killed or why it’s blood was mixed with the victims… unless it had scratched the mistress or something

In a way The Consul was kind of right with the Hegemonies over reliance of technology and the ai systems and personalities that control them ultimately being their downfall to the point where whether the human species dies or not is decided between factions of the core

Also kind of crazy how many big reveals are still coming, Severens whole conversation with Ummon is filled with them and all of them blew my mind

Good progression I’m liking how this mystery and the players have almost all been set-up ad I especially like that a map was included

As for the actual case it’s interesting that both of the married couple had lovers and hence had motive with it likely being the man’s lover in which case he could of killed because she demanded more or something and the wife could of killed her out of jealousy, not enough info

Having just read the start of the prologue, the framing device of the author of the book putting himself in the story and hearing about the case from a series of letters from the detective who worked on it is pretty cool especially as we begin to get into what is called “a faceless corpse” mystery

Woah okay very fast conclusion to this part with a bunch of stuff happening in quick succession (literally). The question was asked in this book what can little people do against a force so big and the answer appears to be: use a bow and arrow, throw a sword or even teapot uppercut combo

Absolutely insane, the descriptions of the worlds as they’re being destroyed both from a little relay and from Duré own perspective is so beautiful and devastating the sheer scale of building up these different worlds and getting us to know them just like we got to know the pilgrims before cutting them down with the Shrike and Ousters respectively is such an awesome confident leap to make in a story

Mostly dedicated to the battle for the Keepers Crescent which is written quite well with the chaos and turning points in it especially the whole underdog offensive of the keeper’s crescent standing against a seemingly massive portion of the crows gang but they finally begin to triumphs little and then hope is dashed as the imperial army also arrives

Its crazy how much of this book can be seen in modern media with Brawne facing down the AI in a digital world with the reveal that the UI already exists at some future point in time but so does another arisen from human consciousness(?) entirely by accident

The fast paced feel of this even though a lot of it is just exposition is incredible and the world building continues to be amazing despite being so far in

It feels like the story’s finally gotten moving at a faster pace now as the crows have made their move still feels like the pacing is a bit rough switching between the softer moments and the faster moments but now that I’m more used to it it feels more natural and flows a lot more easily

Toshiko leaving the pearl to “dry”? It’s a pearl why would it need to dry you just used a towel to dry it??

I like how the story is progressing even if there is some struggle between balancing the serious and silly moments however intentionally it may have been done but still the Kawakami’s story remains interesting and Theo’s is decent even if still feeling a bit slower. I also like how the world continues to build out with more information and locations slowly being revealed which is something that really works
