I first made Flo's Afghan-style Bean Curry.

I am absolutely loving this book, but reaching this part about missing postpartum skin to skin contact with your newborn during the Sacred Hour after birth is astonishingly painful.

Every so often I begin a book and feel immediately immersed and invested in the characters. And it makes me feel joy and a little preemptive sadness.

Utterly random, but I’m overly amused that the author, narrating her own audiobook, says “gyro” as in gyroscope, rather than “euro” or similar.

He’s a happy little figure this morning, for he has a great piece of information, spoon-sized, and he plans to have a really good stir with it.

Shauna closes her eyes and listens as the house sings the backing vocals to the song of the storm outside. Floorboards groan and windowpanes shudder. Somewhere a door slams in time while the keyholes whistle the high notes.

The house is dark with a foxy musk smell, a smell that rolls out along the hallway in place of a carpet.

The smell is so strong that Mahony can taste it; a thick damp prowls into his nose and mouth, settles on the back of his tongue, and starts to paw his throat closed. It is the smell of a million mold-blossomed pages, of a thousand decaying bindings, of a universe of dead words.

Everyone grows up eventually.
That’s the thing, you don’t want it to stop. You know it will, eventually, no matter what. So, you try to prolong it. Every parent’s their own magician, and we just try to stall that distance for as long as we can. And the trick is to do it without messing up your kid.

We take our memories wherever we go, and what’s left are the ones that stick around. That’s how we make a life.
