Why is the prose in this actually spectacular? Like this has NO right being as good as it is. I will die on the hill that “Revenge of the Sith” is a great movie, (both from a world building perspective and straight up nostalgia) but the novel streamlines a lot of the clunky dialogue and adds such important context to the characters without having to crawl through wookiepedia.

I want to like Barnes’ writing so much because the premises are always so interesting but the execution always lacks.

I love having to argue with myself over whether the book is better than the movie. Especially when the movie is a masterpiece. This is how all horror-adjacent mystery crime/thrillers should be written.

The first 20% of this book essentially functions as a prologue for the author to say “I PROMISE it’ll be spooky if you read” rather than just make it interesting.

Only got a little bit into this and I haven’t done nonfic in a while but I’m super interested so far.

Strong considering a DNF. The characters are so uninteresting, the suspension of disbelief is completely gone, and the book could have shaved off probably 30-40%.

Goated audiobook experience. Michael C. Hall’s voice is like crackly gravel but also like maple syrup.
