Not hard to read but annoying as hell. Regardless of whether I like, pity, dislike or hate a character at the beginning of a Tolstoy book, by the middle I want them all dead.

For a feel-good book, it is not making me feel good at all. I hate Rek and he is supposed to be one of the main characters. He is disgusting, though. If it weren't for Druss I would have stopped reading this crap.

I am so scared about reading this one. I liked the first book a lot. I don't want that to be ruined. I have liked the first book in so many series, only to end up despising it all after the second book. Please don't let me down, N. K. Jemisin!

Book 4: A good ending to the story. Shrike seems to be the best character throughout. Wren was worse than ever. Poor Theo is going to end up like Hester, with a partner who is likely to cheat every time he turns his head. Tom is the same idiot as ever except that at his age now it is not cute anymore. All in all, except for Shrike and Stalker Fang, the characters were bad in this whole series.

Book 3: I hated most of the book for how Hester was treated, but the ending was good. She is finally free. Free from the emotionally abusive cheater husband she got stuck with due to a teenage crush and an unplanned pregnancy. Free from her bratty child who dislikes her mom for having a scar. Free from that stupid town with shallow people who disliked her for being different.

Book 2: Same main characters but the fun is somehow lost. Now they are behaving like normal teenagers and having a love problem which is boring and annoying. Bad actions can be easily repaid by good ones and the bad guy from the last book is justified. The world is much the same as it was in the first book except that now it is just repetitive.

Book 1: Very fun to read. Interesting story. Interesting worldbuilding. Nice characters. There are some instances of sexism, but not very visible and it doesn't harm the story. It's for young adults, so there is no great philosophy, but it does make some interesting points. I hate that the engineers are the bad guys, but it makes sense in the world he has created and for the idea of the book.

Good thing Rowan knows how to have sex. Since he is the worst assassin ever and nobody is likely to hire him after this, maybe he can find a job as a gigolo. What a wimp!

Finally! A person who deserved it got killed. I can't believe people stopped reading because of this. It was the only part of the book so far to actually be worth reading. The writer still managed to ruin it by telling us that this one was the least bad of the 11. I really hope he came up with something better for the other kills!

Now it is just boring and annoying. Innocent characters get worse punishments for indiscretions they might commit in the future than the guilty ones do for crimes they have already committed. Slaves miss their owners. Good guys kill people and are really bad at covering it up. Bottom line: good is evil, up is down, 2+2=5.

As if Keira wasn't whiny and annoying enough, now she is jealous about a guy she has no claim over? She is a caricature.

And the third maybe-kill was worse than the first two. Her assassin companion got thrown down from the dragon and was less useful than a sack of potatoes, her dragon got badly wounded and she got raped again. All that only to end with her target getting thrown in the river and quite likely surviving. Keira is whiny and Courage is stupid. I expected it to be more like "I spit on your grave". It isn't even close.

Now he has her thinking about how hot her rapist is. It keeps getting worse.

And the first two killings weren't satisfying at all. Too quick and too painless for the crime they apparently committed.

She touched her face looking at herself in the mirror, bla bla bla... Is she doing cam porn or is she there to kill someone? No women would act like that. Certainly not one who has been abused. This book is starting badly! :(

If you survive the first chapter, it gets easier. It is hilarious, but the language of the first chapter takes some deciphering. Italian, Latin and German words are mixed and spelt wrong. The grammar is strange and there is no punctuation. Not exactly the easiest book to read in a language you haven't used for 12 years.

I'm not liking it. It doesn't make sense. It is not consistent with itself. There is no explanation for how such a place would come to be. It seems like the author was too busy trying to make fun of everyone that he had no time for worldbuilding. Like, why would consumerism be important in a world where everyone is conditioned for their specific tasks and there is nobody to profit from it?

"Moral education, which ought never in any circumstances, to be rational." It never is. You don't need a dystopia for that.
