The narrator accepts the job offer from Brother Jack, and he gives Mary money back for his rent. He leaves and takes up a new identity as a speaker for the Brotherhood. The narrator goes to his first rally in a strange arena.

The narrator is released from the company hospital and is basically electrically lobotomized. He is taken in by a woman named Mary and tries to look for work. He makes a speech to a group of people, who are enraged by an old couple being evicted. He escapes the police and some rando comes up to ask him to speak for his organization.

The narrator gets into a fight with the man who works in the boiler room, however, he ends up getting hurt. He wakes up in a hospital, and the doctors are performing electroshock therapy upon him. He cannot remember who he is, his name, or any information about himself.

The narrator begins working for Brockway and learns about the gauges and such, and Brockway talks about how he helped build the plant and the idea of "white is right". The narrator goes to get his lunch and walks into a labor union meeting. They rejected him from the meeting, saying that he would threaten their goals and program.

The narrator didn't get the job with Emerson because he read the letter, and it basically stated that he was asked to not get a job anywhere and he was permanently expelled. He goes to work for a paint company, and is asked, after working in one building, to be an assistant for a black man in the basement.

The narrator is going to the different offices of the people whom the letters were addressed to. He goes to the office of Mr. Emerson, and he speaks to his son. He has an interesting interaction with his son, who asks if he can speak to him frankly despite not knowing him.

The narrator is expelled from the school because of his decision to appease Mr. Norton and bring harm to him. The dean offers to help him get a job, in order to come back and pay his tuition for next year because he saw potential in the narrator. He tells him to learn how to "play the game". The narrator sees the veteran from the Golden Day on his train to Harlem. When he arrives, he recognizes the differences.

Mr. Norton asks to stop and speak to Jim Trueblood, also known as the disgrace previously mentioned. Trueblood reveals that he raped his daughter, whom is now carrying his child. Mr. Norton gets sick and has to leave; he asks the narrator to drive him to the Golden Day, a bar, for a "stimulant".

The narrator is driving one of the Founders of his college around, which is a part of his job. The Founder describes how the narrator is a part of his fate, and asks him to one day for the narrator to tell his fate. They stop on the side of the road to look at log cabins that belonged to slaves.

The narrator is forced to give his speech regarding humility to the same men that were bringing him to the fight ring and got him to scavenge for money on an electrified rug. He was awarded a scholarship to an all-black college for his speech. At the school, he recounts the campus, comparing the barrenness to the life present upon it. He works as a driver for a millionaire.

The narrator describes his living situation underground, and the author describes paradoxes between life and death, light and dark, and blindness and sight. The narrator's grandfather died, and he is haunted by his grandfather's last words that expressed his guilt and shame for using humility towards the white man. The narrator goes to this fight ring and this white lady starts dancing naked and it was so weird wtf

After getting into a fight with Fernando, Michele leaves Mario to begin to travel to Rome. He is arrested, however, though he is released once the officer gains confirmation that he is pardoned. Michele grows ill and dies, and he is promised that his paintings will be the "heartbeat" of Rome.

Michele earns his Knighthood, but he gets into a fight with another Knight, Fernando. He is thrown into a prison, and is allowed to escape by the pope and is pardoned. He is stripped of his Knighthood, and is in Sicily, where Mario resides. Mario has his own studio and a lot of apprentices, and they go out together. Michele sees Fernando though, and they fight.

Michele gets a commission at St. Peters, but it is taken down after three days. Michele kills Ranuccio, and is forced to flee to Venice. He is forced to enter knighthood courses, and is using painting as his payment, in order to get a pardon for his murder.

The libel charges are dropped, and Onorio and Michele come back to Rome. The Pope dies, and a new one is appointed, but he dies within a week. Lena has left Michele while he is gone to marry another man. A new pope is appointed, which has approved of Michele's atlerpieces before.

Anna dies from seizures and complications during birth, prompting Mario to leave for Sicily to marry the woman his father wants him to. Michele replicates her death in his painting for a church about the Virgin Death. Michele and his friends get arrested for libel against a painter that took Michele's commission. Lena is painted as the Virgin, and Michele attacks a man trying to marry her because he slandered Michele

Michele becomes the most well-known and sought-after painter in Rome, after his new version of St. Matthew is deemed better. He is still trying to get a commission at St. Peters. Mario says he is going to leave Rome, as they are almost 30; however, Anna turns out to be pregnant and Mario's Sicilian honor is keeping him with her.

The Church is not pleased with Caravaggio's painting of St. Matthew because they believed he looked too dirty, and not idealistic enough. Filide comes to Michele, saying that she stabbed another courtesan after seeing her in bed with their pimp, whom she loves. Michele gets into a fight with the pimp and gets thrown into jail.

Caravaggio goes to see Filide to plant a rumor about his old master, and he says he will not be seeing her again. A philosopher named Bruno is being executed, and has been rotting in the jail. He is executed by burning at the stake, and Michele deems him a martyr.

Michele finishes his commissions for the church, and he becomes extremely well known. He still is hoping for a commission for St. Peters and from the Pope. He begins to get thrown into jail multiple times. While he is playing chess with Del Monte, he is visited by his old master, who tries to nominate him for a religious painting institution and attempts to take credit for training him.

Beatrice and her family's execution caused mass mourning throughout the city, leaving Michele to be inspired to paint an image of the event. Michele gets a sword, and is arrested by the Roman police because they believe he does not have a permit. Michele is given a commission for two altarpieces for a church, though he is disappointed because it isn't for St. Peters.

Ficille speaks to Caravaggio of the noblewomen Beatrice who is to be executed or tortured because her and her family killed her father, who raped and assulated their family. Caravaggio begins to paint Ficille as Judith, whom people see as Beatrice. He vows to paint Beatrice again in defiance of the pope, and she faces her public execution. However, people were saddened by her injustice.

Caravaggio acquaints himself with the other men in Del Monte's home, and finds a dog, whom he names Raven. He goes to visit Anna, and it has been a month. She gets angry when he says he wants to paint her in the Church, and he finds himself seeing a courtesan named Ficile.

Michele's painting called the Storyteller gets sold, and he finishes the painting with Anna as the Virgin Mary. When he arrives at the shop to see the progress on the selling of his card painting, he is greeted by Del Monte, a cardinal. He offers Michele his patronage, and Michele, Mario, and Giovanna move to Del Monte's home.

Michele and Mario leave the church after Michele finishes his painting of the fortuneteller and the husband. He gives his art to a shop to sell for commission. He asks for a room at a brothel; he recognizes the owner's daughter and offers to pay her. He depicts her as the Holy Mary, and gets praise from the people around her.

Michele asks Mario to pose for him, and he depicts him as very beautiful, which angers the master. The master's brother asks if Michele wants to drink with him and the master; Michele gets kicked by a horse and goes to an infirmary, where he meets a nun. He vows to not go back to that studio, and gets Mario and the nun to model for him.

Caravaggio is a painter that moved to Rome to become an apprentice under d'Arpino. He brings another person from his old studio, Mario to come with him, in the hopes that he learns how to draw life. He hates drawing fruit, though it is something that he is proficient at. He cannot draw actual moving life because there are rules for painting established by the Roman Church.

Tea goes off with Polaire and Zoya to find the dragon-like daeva. It had killed 20 Deathseekers, a massive amount of casualties in their terms. Tea disobeyed the council by going; however, she can feel it in the water and believes she can control it.

Mistress Parimma allows Tea to begin her Asha training after Tea accidently resurrected a cemetary, along with an old king who was mysteriously killed and never found. She begins lessons in the arts and fighting, and her familiar, or her brother Fox, joins the Kion army. She gets three new teachers, along with Mykaela to help her become an asha and master her Dark abilities.

Tea is from a small village named Knightscross, with two of her sisters being witches, When Tea's brother dies, she raises him from the dead without her conscious knowing. Bone witches, a type of asha, is the type of witch she is, and is outcasted from her society. An older bone witch, Mykaela comes to take her and teach her the ways of the bone witch.
